Causes of Low Thyroid Levels

One of the top questions I get asked is, "what are the causes of low thyroid levels?" Decreased thyroid function is one of the top most complaints I have seen amongst clients and thyroid issues such as Hashimotos disease have been on the rise. The thyroid gland is responsible for many functions in our body, the main one being our metabolism.

Symptoms of Decreased Thyroid Function:

  • Fatigue

  • Brain fog

  • Dry skin and hair

  • Depression

  • Recurrent infections

  • Heavy menstrual periods

  • Pain and stiffness in the joints

Causes of Low Thyroid Levels:

  • Stress

  • Nutrient deficiency

  • Heavy metal accumulation

  • Imbalance of healthy gut bacteria (dysbiosis or candida overgrowth)

  • Low selenium and iodine levels


  • Low stomach acid

  • Iron and B12 deficiency

  • Weight gain

Food to Include

  • Brazil nuts (excellent source of selenium) 1-2 per day

  • Sea weed and sea food - source of iodine

  • Magnesium rich foods such as banana, dark chocolate, nuts and seeds

Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol as these both deplete the body of necessary vitamins and minerals and increase stress on the body.
