The Best Foods for Healthy, Clear Skin
Not sure about anyone else but I know my skin is in for some major TLC after the summer. I don't wear sunscreen as often as a should. Pollution, poor diet and stress can all contribute to blemishes, clogged pores and uneven skin tone. Now that summer is over and the colder weather is among us, it’s time to give our skin some extra care from the inside out. What you put in your body has a much of an effect on your skin as what you put on it. The ideal diet for glowing skin is full of nourishing, hydrating foods and lots of healthy fats. I'll also share with you some of my favorite skin care products at the moment and a yummy recipe!
Top Foods and Supplements to Include in Your Diet for Glowing Skin
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: Omega 3’s help keep skin smooth and supple. They also help to reduce inflammation, which can be particularly good for those who suffer from acne or psoriasis. Omega 3's can also help ward off wrinkles.and keep skin feeling supple. Fatty fish, nuts, seeds and avocados are all excellent sources of omega 3's .Try supplementing with a good quality fish or flax oil if you think your diet might be lacking.
Antioxidants: Vitamins A, C and E: Fill your plate with colorful veggies like red and orange peppers, green leafy veggies such as spinach and kale to help clean out your liver, rid your body of excess toxins and combat free radicals. If we are unable to rid our bodies of excess toxins, they can often be released through our skin, contributing to blemishes. Chlorella is an amazing super food that you can add to your water or smoothie as well that is full of anti-oxidants and skin loving nutrients.
Turmeric: Turmeric is one of my all time favorite spices to include in my diet. It is so good for so many things! Turmeric helps to reduce inflammation in the body, cleanse the liver and is antimicrobial and anti-fungal to help combat bad bacteria in the gut. Add it to smoothies, soups or make one of my turmeric lattes!
Probiotics: Looking after gut health is always my top priority. If you have a compromised gut due to a poor diet, stress or if you have taken antibiotics, it is important to replenish the health bacteria in the gut. An imbalance of bacteria can lead to allergies which can trigger skin issues such as psoriasis and acne. Include fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir and kombucha.
Zinc: Zinc is an excellent supplement to include in your diet if you suffer with acne. It is known to help reduce inflammation caused by bacteria and reduce the effect that hormones can have on the skin. It can also help open pores so they are less prone to becoming clogged.
Don’t forget to keep well hydrated and avoid excess caffeine, alcohol and sugar! These three can have affects on your hormones which can contribute to acne, psoriasis and eczema.
Use quality skin care products. What you put on your skin is just as important as what your diet. Avoid harsh chemicals that can disrupt your hormones and have negative impacts on our environment. I always look for natural ingredients that are non- comedogenic. I like using a light exfoliator and a sheer moisturizer with SPF. A new skin care line I have been using and loving is called FRÉ*. This is one of my favourite recipes full of foods that help keep your skin glowing. Avocados are full of healthy fats and maca powder, cinnamon and sea salt help to balance hormones and blood sugar levels. Give it a try!
Avocado Glow Mousse
2 tbsp plant based protein powder
1 tbsp cacao powder
1/2 tsp maca powder
sprinkle of cinnamon
pinch of sea salt
2-3 tbsp almond milk
Toppings: Goji berries, hemp hearts, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, mixed berries.
Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until pudding like consistency. You may have to add more almond milk depending on the type of protein powder you use.
