Good Digestive Health

Issues with good digestive health are probably some of the most common complaints I have received with my clients. The best supplements for digestion aren't necessarily even supplements. There are many foods that can aid in the digestive process as well Pinpointing the exact cause can sometimes be tricky! There are many things that could be causing you to feel out of balance: allergies, candida, over loaded liver, under-active stomach, high stress levels… I could go on! Below are my recommendations on the best supplements to aid in digestion.

Top 5 Best Supplements for Good Digestive Health:

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar: This is my number one go to for digestive issues. Apple cider vinegar helps to increase stomach acid which helps aid in the breakdown of foods, especially protein. If someone is having issues with an under-active stomach (feeling bloated and fatigued after meals are both signs of an under-active stomach).

  2. Probiotics: probiotics are so so important. I recommend supplementing with a good quality probiotics to most of my clients. Our micro-biome (healthy bacteria in the gut) can be effected by so many things such as antibiotics, processed food, stress. An imbalance of good to bad bacteria can effects our mood, energy levels and how we absorb vitamins and minerals. II try to include two sources of probiotic rich foods per day such as fermented veggies (kimchi, sauerkraut), miso, organic yogourt or kefir or kombucha (my personal favourite).

  3. Digestive Enzymes- Digestive enzymes are also a great supplement to include if you think you might have food allergies or candida. Digestive enzymes assist your body in breaking down nutrients so they are more bioavailable to the body. If you have any digestive issues such as IBS, acid reflux or leaky gut this is a good supplement to include in your diet. I typically suggest it to clients who had candida or dysbiosis as well it can help breakdown bad bacteria as well.

  4. Coconut oil- Coconut oil acts as a anti-microbial (thanks to the caprylic acid) so it is excellent to include in your diet to help combat bad bacteria and candida overgrowth. Coconut oil also has anti inflammatory properties that can help soothe inflammation in the digestive tract.

  5. L-glutamine- L-glutamine is an amino acid that is commonly known for being taken post workout to help with muscle recovery. It can help with the mucosa lining and repair leaks in the intestinal walls. It can be extremely beneficial to those suffering with ulcers or leaky gut syndrome or other digestive disorders.

These are some of the best supplements for digestion that I use on a daily basis. Try to incorporate one or two of them into your diet and see how your digestive system thrives.
