Vanilla Coconut Collagen Balls

Collagen is all the rage in the health and wellness industry right now and for a good reason. It is great for some many things including healthy skin, hair and nails, improving digestion and joint health.

As the importance of gut health is on the rise, collagen has been used to help with digestive issues and healing the lining of the gut. Nine out of ten people who I help complain of having some type of digestive issue. Collagen can help to seal the walls of the intestines, aiding with issues like IBS and leaky gut.

Types of Collagen:

Marine Collagen: Comes from the left over skin and scales of fish. It is great for boosting the health of your hair, skin and nails. Just be wary of mercury in products that come from fish. A brand I have used and trust is TruMarine Collagen.

Bovine Collagen: Collagen that comes from cartilage, bones and hide of a cow. It is the most similar to our own collagen making it easy to digest and absorb. Make sure you choose a product that comes from grass fed cows and is of high quality. My favourite brands are Organika or Progessive.

I have had a few vegans/vegetarians ask about collagen. Collagen supplements come from animals, there is no vegan alternative but there are supplements that can help with collagen synthesis. Eating foods that contain higher levels of vitamin C (berries, citrus fruits, broccoli, kale etc.) as well as protein rich foods containing the amino acids glycine, proline and lysine (quinoa, beans, tofu, tempeh) can help your body build collagen.

How to Use It:

Collagen comes in a powder form and you can get it in flavoured or non flavoured. I typically get non flavoured as it mixed in just about anything. I add it to my turmeric elixirs, matcha lattes, bulletproof coffees. You can also throw it into your favourite protein bar or ball recipe.

Where to Get It:

Any health food or specialty grocery stores should have it!

Vanilla Coconut Collagen Balls

  • 1/2 cup coconut butter (should be soft and easy to stir)

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted

  • 1/4 cup collagen powder (I used Organika Enhanced Collagen)

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 3 tbsp coconut flour

  • 1-2 tbsp of nut milk

  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Add stevia to sweeten if needed. Roll into small balls and into shredded coconut. If you don't have collagen, you could sub in your favourite vegan protein (or whey but I find it makes a gummy consistency). You could also sub in almond or peanut butter for a different flavour instead of the coconut butter.

Make sure to tag me if you make these!
