5 Ways to Balance Hormones Naturally

August 30, 2017

Like you, I've been searching for ways to balance hormones naturally. A couple of years ago before I started studying nutrition, I was on birth control and just felt like something was off in my body. I was holding onto weight, I had mood swing, everything seemed to upset my stomach. I just didn’t feel right every time I took this little pill. I started to research about the effects of birth control and decided to quit it...

Big mistake. My skin broke out like crazy and hormones were all out of sorts. I started to research ways to rebalance your hormones and one of the biggest things I took away was looking after your gut health, which can be compromised especially if you’re taking birth control pills.

5 Ways to Balance Hormones Naturally:

  1. Consume omega 3’s. Fish, flax and hemp oils are my favourite way to get in some health fats. Healthy fats are the building blocks of many hormones in our bodies. They also help to lower inflammation in the body as well. Try to stay away from high levels of omega 6 fatty acids in the diet which can be found in processed foods that contain vegetable or soy oils.

  2. Eat good quality, whole and organic foods as much as possible. Foods that are high in chemicals and toxins contain xenoestrogens that can actually mimic estrogen and act as hormone blockers.

  3. Look after your gut: Gut health is so important especially if you have high stress levels, taken antibiotics or have an unhealthy diet. If you have issues like candida or an overgrowth of bad bacteria, these can actually produce estrogen like subatance that can get reabsorbed into the blood stream. Replenish the healthy bacteria with lots of probiotics- fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir, and organic yogourts.

  4. Limit the caffeine. Caffeine stimulates your adrenal glands to pump out cortisol. If your adrenal glands are already stressed, this can further increase

  5. Try an adaptogen. Adaptogens have become an increasing trend over the last couple of years. These help your body adapt to stress. My favourites are maca, ashwaghandha, and medicinal mushrooms like chaga, reishi or cordycepts.
