Best Smoothie Add Ins

I love smoothies. I have one almost every single day. For me it helps to make sure I get in all my nutrients for the day and load up on extra fruits and veggies. With a healthy combination of protein, carbs and fats it helps to keep you feeling full and satisfied. 

 

Here are my favourite smoothie add ins:

 

Hemp Hearts: Full of healthy omega 3's and protein. I love adding this to smoothies to help keep me feeling full and my blood sugar levels stable.

 

Cinnamon: Studies have shown that cinnamon can help stabilize blood sugar and help with insulin resistance. Add it in your foods whenever you can. I love it in oatmeal, coffee and a banana smoothie. 

 

Cacao Nibs: Who doesn't like chocolate? An excellent source of fibre, iron and magnesium. They also add a nice crunch to your smoothie. Add on top and eat with a spoon or blend it right in!

 

Turmeric: Turmeric is my favourite anti-inflammatory add in to smoothies or hot drinks. It helps to soothe digestive issues such as bloat and reduce inflammation. I like grating in fresh turmeric or using an organic powder. 

 

Maca: I have been using maca for years and it is my favourite hormone balancing supplement. Maca is a plant grown in Peru and is known to help balance out the adrenal glands, increase energy and athletic endurance. It also helps to balance estrogen levels. I love adding it to my smoothies and oatmeal during marathon training. It has a nice butterscotch flavour as well.

 

Natural Protein Powder: I almost always add a protein powder to my smoothie. Protein helps to keep you full and is excellent for recovering after a workout. Try to choose a all natural protein powder with limited ingredients. I personally like plant based protein powder and typically choose a blend of brown rice and pea protein. Bonus points if it is sprouted or fermented as it makes it easier to digest. If you opt for a whey protein, look for grass fed, organic and sweetened with stevia.

 

Extra Tips: Add frozen bananas and avocados to smoothies to get them thick and creamy. Slice bananas and avocados into small chucks and put into a baggie. Lay it flat in the freezer so they don't stick together!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup nut milk

  • 2 handfuls of organic spinach or kale

  • 1/2 frozen banana

  • 1/4 frozen avocado

  • 1 scoop plant based protein powder (I like Garden of Life or Vega Sport Chocolate)

  • 1 tsp maca powder

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Method:

Add all ingredients to blender. Blend and serve. Top with your favourites to add some texture. I love adding homemade granola, coconut flakes or cacao nibs!
