Detox, cleanse, reset.... spring is one of the most common times people look at doing a detox or cleanse. The winter is over, summer is around the corner and it is a great time to give your body a little clean out, instil some healthy habits and do a whole body detoxification.
There seems to be a lot of stigma around if we actually need to detox our bodies or not. While our body does do a pretty good job of cleansing itself and getting rid of the bad stuff, our detoxifying organs can get a little overburdened due to poor dietary choices, alcohol, caffeine, medications and environmental factors.
One big topic I commonly get asked about is juice cleanses. I am not a huge advocate of trendy cleanses such as the Master Cleanse or using juice cleanses for a quick fix or weight loss. I do think there is a time or place for cleanses, especially if you have digestive issues. If you have trouble with allergies, candida or parasites, a cleanse can set you back on the right track by giving your digestive system a chance to repair itself and starve the bad guys that are causing an upset. Please ask for the advise of a nutritional professional before you decide to embark on one!

Leafy greens: Spinach, kale, arugula, dandelion greens are all full of anti-oxidants that help to super liver detoxification. They are chock full of chlorophyl which can help the body get rid of environmental toxins and heavy metals.
Beets: Not only do beets add a lovely colour to your meal but they are full of nutrients that help support liver detoxification. Beets contain an anti-oxidant called betaine which aid the liver in getting rid of toxins.
Lemon: One of the first things we were taught in nutrition school is to always start with warm lemon water first thing when you wake up. This helps to wake up the digestive system by stimulating the liver to produce bile, which helps break down fats. It also helps increase stomach acid as well. Lemon water stimulates the digestive tract, increases elimination and hydrates the body after sleeping. At the very least, start to make it a habit to drink at least 500 mls of water when you first wake up.
Green Tea: Green tea is an amazing alternative to coffee, especially in the afternoon when your blood sugar levels are low and most people are reaching for sugar or another cup of coffee. Green tea has polyphenols that helps to cleanse and detoxify the blood. It also helps to balance our blood sugar levels, and contains catechtins that help with blood pressure and cholesterol. My personal favourite is matcha, which is ground up green tea leaves. I love to replace my morning or afternoon coffee with it. Try my matcha latte for a sweet and indulgent treat instead of the usual latte.
Probiotics: Good gut health is one of the fundamentals of nutrition. You need to make sure you are digesting and absorbing the nutrients you are consuming. Fungus and bad bacteria in the gut such as candida can actually expel toxins which get reabsorbed through the intestines into the blood stream. Include a good quality probiotic supplement and fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, organic yogourt and kefir to replenish the good bacteria in the gut and ward off the bad ones.
