As a Nutritionist, one of my top priorities when helping clients is addressing gut health. With so many people complaining about digestive issues, food allergies, skin issues like acne and psoriasis as well as lowered immunity, I cannot stress the importance of looking after the microbiome and replenishing it with good quality probiotics. Probiotics aid in digestion and breaking down food, destroying harmful pathogens and producing vitamins b and k.
Replenishing the gut with good bacteria is essential for overall health. Our micro biome can be compromised due to antibiotics, stress, poor diet, alcohol, and medication. It is considered our second brain and up to 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut, so it is important to look after it!
There can be a lot of confusion when it comes to choosing a probiotic. When looking for a good quality probiotic, keep in mind these 4 things;
1) Colony Forming Units. Look for one that is between 3-50 billion. The more doesn't necessarily mean the better. You want quality over quantity.
2) Diversity of Strains. When choosing a probiotic you want to choose one that has multiple strains in it. This ensures that the bacteria supports both the large and small intestine. Different strains also have different functions in the body and many work together.
3) Shelf stability and time released capsules. You want to make sure as many of the probiotics as possible are alive at the time of buying. Most of the time the probiotics don't make it from the manufacture to the stores! Also look for time released capsules. This ensures the probiotics live through the elements of the digestive tract and get to where they are supposed to colonize.
4) Read the label. Make sure the probiotics you choose have clean ingredients with no additives. Look for one that is vegan, gluten free and non-GMO.
Along with a healthy diet full of whole foods which support your digestive tract, I always recommend clients to invest in a good quality probiotic. I love the ones from Genuine Health and have used both the advanced gut health probiotic Women’s DAILY and UTI which contains CRAN naturelle™ - organic whole fruit cranberry powder containing natural seed, oils, and juice, as cranberry has been proven to be preventative as well as accelerate urinary tract infection recovery.
I had the pleasure of attending an event of Genuine Health last month and met the founder and CEO of the company, Stewart Brown. His passion for health was inspiring. He and his team are dedicated to teaching others about the health of our microbiome and all their products are thoroughly backed by research. They have a range of products from fermented protein and greens supplements to probiotics and multivitamins.
If you are in Vancouver, most pharmacies carry them as well as Wholefoods and Body Energy Club. For more locations click here.
Remember, it is not always about what you eat but more what you digest and absorb so nourish that microbiome!
