Paul is a personal trainer and influencer from Vancouver who I came across a few months ago. I was intrigued by his videos on intermittent fasting and have been getting asked lots of questions around the topic. Have a read to peek into the life of an influencer and some of his tips and tricks for staying in shape.
Share a little bit with us. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Tall Paul aka Paul Marlow, I go with the nickname first because it has morphed into my most known name. I am personal trainer by income, social media influencer by passion.
I have been a personal trainer for 7 years now and 90% of my income comes via my 1 on 1 clients. In the last 1.5 years I have started using social media to grow my brand awareness, and that's where my real passion lies. It covers inspiring tall guys to be fit and dress well to healthy habits in life for anyone to holistic medicine advice to workout motivation. I really hit the full gambit, but at the centre of it is Tall Paul the brand. That's my key. Building all this out around Tall Paul will transition my income from hours spent in person, to online and 24/7
How did you get into the health and wellness community?
I have been an athlete since I was a little kid. Playing baseball, basketball, soccer, rugby and volleyball while growing up and into high school. When my college ball in Louisiana was finally over, I knew that I didn't want to sit behind a desk for the rest of my life. So I decided to take what I learned from my countless hours in the weight room and help show others.
What inspires you?
People who show growth.
Anyone can say they want to do something, and tell the world they are doing something, but in months time they usually give up and move on. To actually see someone quietly evolve over months to years time in their choice area, is the most inspiring thing to me.
What is your food philosophy?
Hahah ummm eat what makes your body feel good…
I have done the whole ‘every 3 hours’ eating routine for multiple years, with eating the same meals majority of the time.
I have weighed out each meal.
I have woken myself up in the middle of the night to take down a protein shake for max
But my current style of eating throws that all out the window , and to be honest I will never ever try those again.
Right now I am doing a loose ITF Intermittent Fasting routine daily. In general its a 16 hour fast. Unlike most people who do this, I don’t count the hours I get to eat, but I count the hours fasted and fill in the rest of the hours with food intake. Rarely do I start and stop my fast the same time daily. It all depends how busy my day is,
how many clients in a row I am training. Mon/Wed/Fri I train 8 clients in a row from 6am-3pm. These days are much different looking than the rest of my days. When I do eat, I just try to make it healthy choices with high fat and protein content. I am not anti carbs, I have just found out that when I eat too many bad carb meals , my digestion slows down. When it slows down, it effects my workouts and my sleep. So why do something that's negative?? I crush donuts and pizza when I am in a good situation, working out hard and my body is burning through food.
Walk us through what a typical day looks like for you...
There is no such thing as typical when you combine self employed personal trainer and social media influencer who needs constant content made haha but i'll try.
I wake at 4am Monday / Wednesday / Friday. I don’t have to leave my place till 5:15am , but I read a few passages from Tim Ferris’s book Tribe of Mentors and then journal, all while drinking my Bulletproof coffee
Side note : Im a big fan of bulletproof coffee for the sake of longer duration of mental clarity and also how it works with ITF
I then train 4 clients in a row … get my workout in the next hour … then train 3 more right after that. All the while just drinking hot lemon water and perhaps a second cup of black coffee if needing it. When I am done my clients and workout, it is 2pm. I still haven’t eaten a meal to break my fast. I usually go to Caveman Cafe and get a meal from there plus bone broth. I choose to drink bone broth before my first meal, because It helps get your digestive system ready or a solid substance to be added again, and very healthy.
After that, I spend the rest of my day writing or taking photos or videos. All depends on what is needed the next week for my content rollout. As for the food I have zero planning. I usually have steak and eggs in the fridge, or will get another meal from Caveman Café. I stop eating anywhere between 7 and 9pm
What are some of your go-to foods/snacks for busy days?
I dont snack, to be honest its never been a habit I had even even before ITF. But with my body being used to not eating for 16hrs, I dont have the desire to snack when hungry. I would rather wait however long it has to be until I get a solid good meal to fill that hunger.
What has been one of your biggest struggles?
My biggest struggle has been something that hindered me greatly up until 2 years ago, and that was desire to grow and become someone. I of course wanted to become something I was proud of, but until 2 years ago I had zero idea how to do it. I have found a path now and people that I have surrounded myself with to help me
whenever I am not sure how to do something.The struggle now is to keep that drive up every day. Its easy to have something come up out of the blue and throw you off track. It just depends how long will I allow that take me off tracks…. hours or days. Im trying to make it less days, and more hours.
What advice do you have for those starting out in their wellness journey?
Dont have a set time frame.. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Dont be afraid to ask others who have shown they know the answer to what you are looking for.
