How to Eat Balanced Through the Holidays

Ahh the holidays, full of treats, potlucks at work, endless chocolates from clients, too much wine by the fireplace and a plate piled high of food at Christmas dinner.

When it comes to balanced eating over the holidays, it is so easy to let all your healthy habits go out the window and promise yourself “In January I’ll get back on track!”. What ends up happening instead is that we stay on the diet bandwagon and never find that balance we are searching for.

Wouldn’t it be great to find a balanced way of eating that you can maintain for life rather than just a few weeks at a time?

Promise yourself things will be different this holiday season by implementing these easy tips to stay balanced this holiday season:

  1. Try to make most of your meal balanced. Protein, fats, fibre and carbs should be a part of your meals *most* of the time. This helps you feel full, satisfied and blood sugar balanced so cravings are kept at bay.

  2. Do not skip meals. Whether you are going to a party where there will be tons of appys or it’s christmas dinner, do not skip meals in order to save up. This will just backfire and cause you to overeat at dinner.

  3. Be mindful with your food choices. Grazing the appy table? Fill up your plate, try to get some protein in if you can and sit down with your food. Grazing often causes us to be unaware of how much we are eating and not actually feeling satisfied. Avoid hanging around the table, constantly munching.

  4. Tune into your hunger. Feeling hungry but dinner isn’t for a few hours? Have a protein rich snack to tide you over.

  5. Keep up with your other healthy habits. Drink enough water and get in movement when you can.

This holiday season I encourage you to ditch the all or nothing approach when it comes to healthy eating. How good would it feel to go into the new year feeling strong, confident and good in your body rather than jumping on a cleanse or intense workout routine?
