The BEST Adrenal Cocktail Recipe
This simple and yummy cocktail is my new favorite drink to have in the morning with breakfast or for a quick pick me up in the afternoon. It’s it loaded with nutrients that support adrenal function and help to regulate hormone health. It’s a great alternative to that extra cup of coffee in the afternoon.
Why is it important to look after the adrenal glands?
The adrenal glands are two small glands located above your kidneys. They are responsible for producing cortisol and adrenaline as well as some sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. When we are stressed, be it from something emotional like a fight with our partner, stress at work, finances or something physical like going too long without eating, doing too many intense workouts, long bouts of cardio or even inflammation in the body, our adrenal glands can be kicked into overdrive.
When this happens, our body prioritizes making cortisol and adrenaline and puts other hormones like the thyroid hormones and progesterone on the back burner leading to hormone imbalances, burnout, sugar and salt cravings, anxiety and painful periods.
Supporting the adrenal glands is a key foundation in addressing hormone imbalances including PMS, hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, PCOS and menopause.
Nutrients that are supportive to adrenal health:
When we are stressed, the body burns through more nutrients so it’s especially important to replenish nutrients such as:
Magnesium
Vitamin C
Potassium
Sodium
When to have it
I love having this nutrient rich drink with a protein rich breakfast to support healthy blood sugar levels. You could also have in the afternoon as a snack with a handful of nuts and seeds!
Optional add in’s
Collagen protein: Collagen is great for supporting a healthy gut, strong hair and nails. The protein also supports balanced blood sugar.
Magnesium powder: Most people are deficient in magnesium and this is an important nutrient to supplement with if you experience anxiety, sugar cravings, low mood and energy. I crack open the capsules or you can buy powder and use a scoop.
Full fat coconut milk: The healthy fat in coconut milk makes this taste like a creamsicle and helps to balance the blood sugar. Add this if you are drinking this on it’s own without food.
