Hormone Balancing Chocolate Berry Smoothie

This is one of my favourite smoothies to make, especially before that time of the month when you body needs a little bit more nutrients (and chocolate!). This smoothie is perfectly balanced with protein, healthy fats and fibre that will keep you full and nourishe. This makes a perfect balanced breakfast or snack option for busy days.

What makes this smoothie hormone friendly?

  1. Protein: Helps to keep blood sugar balanced which is key for happy hormones. It also helps to manage sugar cravings. As women, we should be aiming for about 80+ grams of protein per day.

  2. Avocado: A great source of healthy fats and fibre. Healthy fats are the building blocks of hormones and fibre helps to further balance blood sugar.

  3. Ground flaxseeds: Full of healthy fats and fibre that promote a healthy gut and prevent constipation.

Benefits of Maca Root for Hormone Health

Maca is an amazing root from Peru that often comes in powder form. It helps to regulate hormone levels, especially progesterone. If you struggle with low libido, up and down moods just before your period or are in perimenopause/menopause, this is a great supplement to include into your routine. It is also helpful for exercise recovery. It has a butterscotch like flavor which is great to add into smoothies.

Hormone Balancing Chocolate Berry Smoothie

  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk

  • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein

  • 1/3 avocado (frozen if you want the smoothie thicker)

  • 1/2 cup frozen berries

  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed

  • 1 tsp maca powder

  • Handful of ice

  • Cacao nibs to top (optional)

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Top with low sugar granola, hemp heats, cacao nibs or whatever you heart desires! Also make sure to tag me @miaharrisnutrition if you make this!
